Kraken Card review: no card fee, but conversion spread still matters

Kraken charges no transaction, FX, ATM, monthly or annual card fee. Real economics still depend on the variable spread used when an asset must be sold and on the 30-day average balance required to unlock cashback.

The 2% headline is a balance tier

The reward rate is based on the 30-day rolling average held across Kraken, Kraken Pro and Krak. New cardholders receive Max-tier rewards for 30 days, but the ongoing 2% tier requires a €50,000 or £50,000 average balance. The applicable rate is set when the merchant settles the purchase.

Max€50,000 / £50,0002%

Eligible purchases have no published monthly reward cap. ATM withdrawals, refunds, reversals, chargebacks, transfers, funding payments and transactions below €0.49 / £0.49 do not earn cashback.

€1,000/month spread sensitivity

Kraken does not publish one fixed card-conversion spread, so the table uses hypothetical 0.25% and 0.75% rates. These are sensitivity tests, not Kraken quotes. Spending an existing primary-currency balance avoids the cross-asset sale modeled here.

Where Kraken Card can fit

UK or EEA users who already maintain the relevant Kraken balance, value a broad spending queue, and can spend primary currency when they want to avoid an asset-sale spread.

Where the headline can mislead

Users moving a large new balance only to unlock cashback, or spending crypto without checking the executable conversion price. A modest spread can consume lower reward tiers.

Balance opportunity cost

Reward tiers do not charge a subscription, but holding assets on a platform can create opportunity cost and counterparty exposure. Under a purely illustrative 4% annual assumption, €50,000 represents €2,000/year. At 2% cashback, offsetting that amount versus Starter requires about €8,333/month of eligible spend.

Moving from Elite to Max adds €40,000 of required average assets for only 0.5 percentage point more cashback. Under the same assumption, incremental break-even spend is about €26,667/month. Existing Kraken balances can materially change this decision.

Availability and practical limits

Kraken Card is available to verified users in the UK and EEA. It is a Mastercard debit card managed in the Krak app, with virtual and physical formats. Daily, weekly and monthly spending and ATM limits vary by region and are shown in-app. Crypto sold for a card payment may create a taxable disposal depending on jurisdiction.
