Cost audit checklist

12 crypto card hidden costs that can erase headline cashback

A crypto card is not a single cashback percentage. The real result is a stack of reward caps, funding rules, conversion mechanics, geography, ATM pricing and tier requirements. This checklist turns those terms into a repeatable audit.

The core rule: model only costs that apply to your spending bucket.

Do not add every percentage in a fee schedule together. FX belongs only to foreign-currency spend, ATM fees only to withdrawals, conversion costs only to the funding path that triggers them, and fixed fees must be amortized over the relevant period. That is the same logic used by the Lumpascan Effective Value Calculator.

1. Cashback cap

A 2% rate can stop behaving like 2% once a monthly cap is hit. OKX EEA non-VIP currently caps ongoing cashback at €10 per calendar month, so €1,000 of eligible spend does not produce €20.

2. Reward-eligible funding asset

The card may support several assets but reward only one. OKX EEA supports USDC and USDG, while cashback is currently tied to eligible USDG-funded purchases.

3. Crypto-to-fiat conversion spread

A small conversion spread applies to every funded purchase. OKX EEA publishes a 0.1% USDC/USDG-to-EUR spread; on €1,000 that is €1 before other costs.

4. Variable asset spread

Kraken advertises zero transaction, FX and ATM fees from Kraken, but explicitly notes that a variable spread can apply when spending across assets. An unknown spread should not be silently modeled as zero.

5. Token-specific spending fee

MetaMask Card pricing depends on what you spend. Certain stablecoin cases are 0%, some non-local stablecoins can cost 0.5%, and other crypto such as wETH is listed at 0.875%.

6. Cross-border fee

A card can advertise good FX mechanics and still charge a separate cross-border fee. MetaMask Virtual currently lists a 1% cross-border fee where applicable.

7. Non-EUR transaction fee

KuCard EEA lists euro transactions as free but charges 2% on non-euro transactions. That can overwhelm modest cashback during travel.

8. ATM fee and minimum fee

KuCard currently lists €2 per ATM withdrawal within Europe and 2% + €2 internationally. MetaMask Virtual lists 2% ATM where withdrawals are supported, before any ATM-operator surcharge.

9. Annual tier or subscription fee

Premium reward rates may sit behind a paid tier. MetaMask Metal currently costs $199/year, so the incremental rewards must first recover that fixed cost.

10. Physical-card issuance or delivery

The virtual card can be free while the physical card is not. KuCard lists €9.99 for a physical card; other programmes can add delivery or replacement costs.

11. MCC and transaction exclusions

Cashback terms often exclude merchant categories. OKX publishes excluded categories and notes that acquiring-bank MCC classification determines eligibility, so an everyday-looking merchant can still fail the reward test.

12. Balance, tier or activity requirement

A headline rate can require substantial assets. Kraken's cashback tiers are tied to rolling average assets: the lowest published tier starts at €200 average assets for 0.5%, while 2% requires a much larger balance.

A fast break-even test

If a premium tier costs $199/year, the monthly fixed cost is about $16.58. A move from 1% to 3% rewards adds 2 percentage points. Ignoring all other costs, the extra reward needs roughly $829/month of eligible spend just to recover that subscription fee. Any reward cap, excluded category or conversion cost pushes the break-even point higher.
