Bitpanda Card review: 1% cashback can disappear in the crypto sale

Eligible crypto-funded purchases earn 1%, but every card payment sells the selected asset into EUR and incurs the applicable Bitpanda trading fee. Stablecoins, fiat, metals and Bitpanda Stocks earn no cashback.

The card payment is also an asset sale

Bitpanda processes card payments in EUR. If crypto is connected, the required amount is sold into the EUR wallet, reserved and then debited for settlement. That conversion can create a trading cost and may be a taxable disposal depending on the cardholder's jurisdiction.

Net reward sensitivity

Bitpanda describes the applicable cost as its usual trading fee and shows the final amount before confirmation; it does not publish one universal card-conversion rate for every supported asset. The table therefore tests three explicit fee assumptions. It is a sensitivity model, not a quoted Bitpanda tariff.

Eligible crypto spendGross 1% rewardNet at 0.5% feeNet at 1.0% feeNet at 1.5% fee

€3,000/month€30.00€15.00€0.00−€15.00

Model: gross cashback minus assumed asset-to-EUR trading cost. It excludes market movement, tax, cashback valuation changes, merchant exclusions and funding costs.

Crypto balance

Eligible purchases can earn 1%, but the automatic sale pays the applicable trading fee. Check the confirmation price for the exact asset before relying on positive net return.

Stablecoin balance

Stablecoins are spendable but explicitly excluded from cashback. The conversion still occurs, so this route should not be presented as a 1% stablecoin card.

EUR balance

Fiat-funded purchases earn no cashback, but avoid the crypto-to-EUR sale and the associated disposal event. This can be operationally simpler.

Local ATM operators may add a separate surcharge. Bitpanda currently states that payments and withdrawals in non-EUR currencies have no additional Bitpanda FX fee, but the Visa conversion rate and third-party ATM charges still matter.

What the headline leaves out

The free card and zero monthly fee are real benefits, and Apple Pay plus Google Pay are currently supported. The economic question is narrower: whether the selected crypto's conversion cost stays below the 1% reward.

Money transfers, utilities, taxes and other listed merchant categories are excluded. Refunds, cashback processing time and asset-price movement can also change the realised value.
